Earlier in his career, he contributed significantly to India’s defence sector as a Senior Scientist and Deputy Project Director at DRDO, working alongside Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on strategic fighter aircraft programmes worth ₹2000 crores. His research expertise spans defence systems, advanced engineering, and academic process innovation, A recipient of 11 major awards—including the State-level “Best Principal” and “Best Professor” honors—Prof. Rao is widely recognized for his leadership in higher education reforms and institutional excellence.
